Adaptable House
Mary Meyer, Founder of Adaptable House
Mary’s life has been defined by movement, resilience, and innovation. A competitive swimmer from the age of five and an elite triathlete for more than three decades, Mary turned her
passion for performance into a lifelong mission: helping others discover their own strength. After an All-American collegiate swim career and an internship with Weyerhaeuser’s groundbreaking wellness program, she launched a 40-year journey as a personal and group fitness trainer, swim and triathlon coach, certified life success coach, and producer of triathlons and canine events.

The confluence of these experiences motivated Mary to think about how home assistive devices could do more than function at the lowest level of capability and be aesthetically pleasing rather than institutional. This inspired the creation of the Adaptable House Project — a vision to redesign the home as an ally in wellness and aging.

This work is the natural extension of Mary’s life mission: to help every person — regardless of age or ability — live more fully, move more freely, and feel truly at home, no matter how their body changes.
In 1992, she founded Mary Meyer Life Fitness, weaving together her expertise in fitness, nutrition, and habit coaching to create a company devoted to making wellness fun, accessible, and sustainable for people of all ages and abilities.
At 45, Mary was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a turning point that deepened her understanding of how our bodies change — and how our environments must change with them. Through her work with clients, Mary developed a unique perspective on the many challenges of healthy aging and chronic disease which was strengthened by supporting her father through Parkinson’s disease. He was a University of Washington Hall of Fame athlete
that qualified for Olympic trials and an example of the challenges of maintaining independence, dignity, and joy in the face of physical decline.

Drawing on more than a decade of research, collaboration, and innovation with an exceptional array of subject matter experts, architects, universities, and health specialists, Mary is pioneering a new standard for homes that are not only functional and safe, but empowering through aesthetics and beauty, ready for life’s changes, day-to-day and over time.
