Lighting that supports mood, movement, and daily life

Concept

The Integrative Lighting System blends therapeutic and architectural lighting into a unified, adaptive environment. Light supports comfort, focus, orientation, and emotional and cognitive well-being. Integrated into floors, walls, ceilings, and furnishings, it shifts color, intensity, and cues to help users feel calmer, energized, or grounded depending on their needs.

Design Intent

This feature supports emotional, cognitive, and physical experiences at home. Soft transitions reduce sensory overload, while brighter, activating light encourages alertness, engagement, and mental clarity. The goal is to make lighting an active partner — guiding movement, supporting rest, and enriching the home environment.

User Experience

Lighting adapts to the individual and moment:
• Gentle illumination guides nighttime navigation
• Brighter light encourages energy and focus
• Color and intensity support relaxation, reflection, or activity
• Wayfinding cues orient and support movement
From getting to the bathroom at night to setting a calm or energizing atmosphere, the system responds seamlessly.

Mary’s Reflection

“Some days I need my home to feel calm and grounding. Other days, I want it to feel alive and energizing. The lighting shifts with me, helping me feel oriented, focused, and at ease — supporting how I think, feel, and move through my home.”

Research & Collaboration

Developed through Human-Centered Design research at the University of Washington and California State University, Long Beach. Work includes adaptive lighting concepts, sensory integration strategies, and architectural applications supporting navigation, mood, and physical engagement.

Next Steps

Full-scale prototypes, system refinement, and manufacturing partnerships are underway. We are seeking funding and collaborators to bring this responsive lighting system into homes.
