Vines And Beads System

Support, and Spatial Flow, and Filtered Light from Above

Concept

The Vines & Beads System defines space while offering gentle physical support. Suspended strands act as visual screens and functional handholds, guiding movement and offering places to stretch or regain balance as you move through the home.

At the same time, the system filters light and creates rhythm and spatial softness — turning support into something beautiful, calming, and integrated into daily life.

Design Intent

This feature blends aesthetics and mobility in a way that feels natural and uplifting. By drawing the eye upward and shaping space with softness, it creates visual interest and opportunities for support.

The goal is to make movement through the home feel fluid and supported while preserving dignity, independence, and a sense of play.

User Experience

Vines and beads create supportive pathways through the home. They define rooms, guide movement, and provide stable handholds for stretching or steadying yourself when needed.
• Use strands for balance or support while walking
• Stretch as you pass through
• Pause and steady yourself with a gentle line of support
• Enjoy the shifting light and visual texture throughout the day

Mary’s Reflection

“I love that this doesn’t look like a support system — it just feels like part of the home. I can reach for it when I need it, and other times I just enjoy how it makes the space feel lighter, calmer, and more alive. It supports my movement while letting me feel independent and at ease.”

Research & Collaboration

Developed through Human-Centered Design research at the University of Washington and California State University, Long Beach. Student teams explored layouts, structure, and interaction — building a strong foundation for prototyping and home integration.

Next Steps

Full-scale prototypes, usability studies, and manufacturing development are underway. We are seeking funding and fabrication partners to bring the Vines & Beads System into homes.
