Wave Wall

Adaptive Design for Rest, Movement, and Flow

Concept

The Wave Wall adapts to your needs - a sculptural feature to sit, lean, stretch, or recline. It doubles as a visual screen and architectural accent, turning ordinary spaces into functional, engaging areas.

Design Intent

Merge beauty and function: the Wave Wall blends form and utility, providing curves, edges, and surfaces that support rest, comfort, and balance—enhancing both the way you feel and the feel of your home.

User Experience

Curves, edges, and waypoints provide support and relief, from a slope under your back to a ledge for a tired leg or a spot to recline — making rest, decompression, and assessment effortless and intuitive.

Lean to decompress or balance
• Stretch along edges to ease tension in muscles and joints
• Sit, rest, or recline on integrated waypoints
• Enjoy the wall as an interactive architectural feature — beautiful, functional, and playful

“Part bench, part body support, part interactive sculpture.”

Mary’s Reflection

“After walking the dogs, I often just need to stop and rest — to catch my breath and assess what comes next. With the Wave Wall, I can lean, stretch, or recline right where I am. It gives me a moment to decompress, have an ‘ahhh’ pause, and reset. The magic isn’t just how it looks — it’s that support is built into the space, helping me move forward with confidence.”

Research & Collaboration

Developed through iterative design research at the University of Washington and California State University, Long Beach. Student and faculty teams explored reconfigurable support elements, integrated surfaces for rest and stretching, and spatial arrangements that encourage privacy, interaction, and engagement.

Next Steps

Engineering refinement, material testing, fabrication, and installation are underway. We are seeking funding and build collaborators to refine, fabricate, and implement this adaptive, interactive architectural system in everyday spaces.
